Voices of Celebration

The Sydney Children’s Choir turns 21 in 2010! And we’re celebrating with a huge concert at the Sydney Opera House on Sunday 4 July at 4pm.

The Sydney Children’s Choir is an iconic presence on the musical landscape of Sydney. Over 500 choristers will combine – including the internationally renowned Gondwana national choirs and the Gondwana National Indigenous Children’s Choir – to sing together in celebration.

The specially selected program showcases a unique repertoire of Australian choral music for children, and is directed by Artistic Director and Founder Lyn Williams oam. A 250-strong alumni choir will also form for this special event. These young people’s passion for singing – ignited in childhood and nourished by their involvement with Sydney Children’s Choir and Gondwana Choirs – has never dimmed.

Duration 130 minutes including interval

This concert is not suitable for children under the age of five.

2009 HIGHLIGHTS

DECEMBER
The Sydney Children’s Choir’s annual Voices of Angels concerts again filled Angel Place with festive cheer. For some of our smallest choristers Voices of Angels is their first public performance, after a year of ‘in-house’ Gondwana concerts for parents and friends. With their more seasoned, older peers from the Senior and Leek choirs singing with them, for many it is an awesome first taste of professional performance. The audience was treated to a wide variety of repertoire, including carols from around the globe, favourite traditional carols, some a cappella Billy Joel, and even singing in Elvish!

JUNE
Over the June long weekend, 35 members of our Senior Choir had the exciting opportunity to travel to Woodford, Queensland and perform with the Gondwana National Indigenous Children’s Choir at The Dreaming Festival. This is one of Australia’s largest international Indigenous arts festivals and the choirs performed to audiences of over 10,000 people in the Opening Ceremony on the Friday night. They also gave a performance of their own composition at the Festival on the Sunday morning. Tony Hillier writing in Rhythms magazine said of their performance – ‘The combined children’s choirs staged a truly uplifting concert… It was a highlight of this reviewer’s first Dreaming festival. Resplendent in black and orange t-shirts, the choirs performed brilliantly, both individually and united - in the latter context for the appropriate finale “One Voice, One Dream”.’
